Telephones and Communication in Japan are in a highly developed state marked by a great degree of technical expertise and innovative methodologies.
Telephones
Japan has a very high rate of telephone connectivity. In addition to home telephones, cellular phones, personal handy phone systems (PHS) and public phones are extensively used by the Japanese. All major city to city lines are now fiber-optic thus providing high quality and fast connectivity. Cellular phone usage is very pervasive throughout the country and the usage of cell phones as voice, information and text messaging devices has developed what is called a mobile phone culture or "keitai" culture within the country.
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (owned by the government until 1985), NTT Worldwide Telecommunications Corp (Kokusai Denshin Denwa Company), and Nihon Kokusai Tsushin are major power players in the Communication sector.
Broadband and Internet
By June 2005, Japan had 19.7 million broadband lines in place, making it the third largest broadband country in the world after the USA and China. Much of the success of broadband in Japan is owed to the stunning growth in 2003 of ADSL as a broadband technology.
