The official language of Japan is Japanese.
Although the Japanese language is generally used throughout the length and breadth of the country, there are dozens of dialects in Japan. These dialects have evolved due to various geographical and historical factors, such as Japan's mountainous island terrain, and its long history of both external and internal isolation.
There is considerable influence of Chinese and English language on Japanese vocabulary and many people do not have too much difficulty understanding English.
The Japanese writing system is constituted by three different character sets. These consists of Chinese characters called Kanji and two syllabic scripts Hiragana and Katakana, having 46 characters each.
Two different writing styles exist in Japan and both are utilized in writing Japanese texts. In the Western style, text is written in horizontal rows from the top to the bottom of the page and in the traditional Japanese style text is written in vertical columns from the right to the left side of the page.
