Fukuoka is the capital of Fukuoka Prefecture located on Kyushu Island.

The City

 - Fukuoka Prefecture consists of 26 cities.
 -  Fukuoka is famous for its colorful festivals. Of these, the most famous are Hakata Dontaku and Hakata Gion Yamakasa.Yamakasa, held for two weeks each July, is said to be Fukuoka's oldest festival.
 -  Hakata Dontaku, held on May 3rd and 4th, is attended by millions of people.
 -  Fukuoka has several important universities such as Fukuoka University, Kyushu Institute of Technology, Kyushu University, and Seinan Gakuin University.

Tourist Destinations

 - Fukuoka Castle located adjacent to Ohori Koen (Park) is a favorite spot for tourists.
 - Enjoy an adventurous ride in Sky Dream Fukuoka, one of the world's largest ferris wheels.
 - Fukuoka Tower, a major landmark of the city, offers a great view of the city.
 - Fukuoka Dome is the favorite venue for various sports events and cultural activities.
 - The Marine Park, Uminonakamichi, has an amusement park, zoo, gardens, beaches, and a large marine aquarium.
 - Shofukuji Temple, built in 12th century, was the first Zen temple to be built in Japan.
 - Fukuoka Asian Art Museum houses a huge collection of paintings, sculptures, prints and handcrafts.
 - Kushida Shrine, which honors the grand deity, Ohata Nushina-mikoto, is another prominent tourist destination.

Shopping/Eating out

 - Canal City is one of the most recent developments in Fukuoka -- it is based on an American shopping mall and has a large array of shops, cinemas, restaurants, and things outlandish.
 - Tenjin is the heart of Fukuoka City. You'll find numerous department stores there.
 - Major dining establishments in Fukuoka are, Voodoo Lounge, Cotton Fields, Fukusen Ju, and Tenjin Core.



Transportation

 - There are many modes of transportation in the city of Fukuoka, Japan. Some of these include the Fukuoka airport, the Japan Railway train service (JR), Shinkansen high-speed rail, subways, taxis, buses, and ferry services. Having such a wide variety of transportation makes owning a car quite unnecessary.
 - Fukuoka is served by Fukuoka Airport; domestic and international flights leave every day from Fukuoka Airport.
